Research into setting and characters

Characters

Lola- Lola is the main character in the film, therefore the main focus. Lola is a 17 year old girl who has died in a car accident, however the audience is unaware of this until the end.  Lola is a quiet, evasive character who doesn't display much emotion. She is neither popular nor unpopular at school but likes to keep herself to herself. She's witty, pessimistic and blunt. To keep things as normal as possible, we decided that Lola will be dressed plainly with basic clothing, e.g. jeans and a top. This also tells the audience that she's not made much effort with her appearance as she has just awoken from the hospital and the way she looks isn't her main priority. Also, when Lola first appears on screen she will be wearing  a hospital gown to show that she's the patient and it would also look unusual waking up in the hospital fully clothed. Lola will appear confused and angry as she doesn't understand why the people she loves are ignoring her and why she woke up in hospital in the first place. Lola is a typical teenager who enjoys socialising with her family and friends and spending quality time with her boyfriend. Lola will also look very pale and unwell.

Lindsay Salmon  from The lovely bones (who is shown below) is what we intend Lola to look like. Dressed casually looking unwell but nothing too out of the ordinary.

Lola's best friend- Lola's best friend will be the complete opposite to Lola. She is really bubbly and up forth and always has a positive attitude. She dresses quite eccentric which is a way of expressing herself as a person and also allowing her personality to shine through. Lola's best friend committed suicide after finding out about Lola's death as both the girls shared a really close, intimate friendship and she felt she couldn't go on living without her. She know about both her death and Lola's death but she doesn't tell Lola so she can find it out for herself. She will also be main character throughout the film and will also look quite pale and unwell. However, she will also have bruising and red marks around her neck to foreshadow her death as she hung herself.

A theme seems to be emerging that characters from The lovely bones are very similar to characters from our film. Holly, is similar to Lola's best friend as she is also bubbly, eccentric and cheerful.
(holly is the one at the right hand side)

Lola's boyfriend- Lola's boyfriend also plays a big role in the film, however, will only be shown briefly in a couple of scenes in the film. Lola's boyfriend is also struggling to come to terms with Lola's death and has therefore had to take part in counselling sessions to help him cope better. His appearance will also be quite shabby as his appearance has taken a backseat allowing him to focus on his main priorities (Lola's death) so his hair will be a little overgrown and he will have a little bit of stubble. He will also appear to be a little evasive and quite blunt as he's not dealing with the situation very well.

Tate Langdon  is a character from American horror story and has a similar persona to what we will try to recreate in our film as Lola's boyfriend. His evasiveness and bluntness is very similar to Lola's boyfriend.

Lola's parents- Lola's parents will appear very ordinary to fit in well with the genre of the film. Both parents will appear extremely distressed and agitated over their daughters death but the audience will realise that they are only behaving in this way because they loved her so much and feel partly responsible for her death. Along with Lola's boyfriend, her parents are also important characters in the film but will only be shown briefly throughout.

The parents in our film will be very similar to Sara and Brian Fitzgerald from  My sisters keeper.  Just like Lola's parents they constantly argue over what's best for their daughter and feel responsible for her illness, although Lola does not have an illness,. None the less, both characters have a similar attitude and approach to what's right and what's best for their daughter so that is why both characters are similar.

Setting

Scene 1) hospital
The first scene will be set in a hospital where Lola wakes up. The hospital will have varies props in the room to make it look more realistic, these will include things like a drip and a heart monitor machine. The opening scene will begin in the hospital room and the final scene of the film will also end in the hospital room. The room will be similar to the hospital scene from the film  My sisters keeper.

Scene 2) Lola's House
The next scene will be when Lola visits her home. In this house, we want to create a messy look for example lots of dishes and glasses on the table and pillows on the floor so everything looks untidy. This gives the audience the impression that something doesn't seem right along with the parents arguing sets the scene and creates a tense atmosphere. Also, to emphasize the idea that things have got out of control, beer bottles and wine bottles will be scatted around the house to imply that the parents have resorted to drinking to comfort themselves over their loss.

Scene 3) The streets (accident scene)
The next scene is when both Lola and her best friend decide to pay Lola's boyfriend a surprise visit and they come across accident scene with flowers, cards and police tape scattered at the side of the road. The scene will be used to foreshadow the end of the film in which Lola realises that the accident scene was the place in which she died, this scene will also be set in the street and we will use props to make it look realistic.

Scene 4) boyfriends house
For this scene, the audience will only see the outside of the boyfriends house. In this particular scene, Lola knocks on her boyfriends house and gets no reply, he then looks out of the window and looks directly at her but obviously cannot see her, Lola gets angry and storms back to the hospital where the final scene will be filmed.
