Research into similar films and storylines

Drama
What defines a Drama genre film?

Drama Films are serious presentations or stories with settings or life situations that portray realistic characters in conflict with either themselves, others, or forces of nature. A dramatic film shows us human beings at their best, their worst, and everything in-between.

What is our chosen genre and why?
The genre of our final film is going to be a drama, this was decided due to the in-depth development of realistic characters within our film who are dealing with emotional issues. A recurring theme which will be used throughout our film will be death and acceptance of death and the sub-genre will be Supernatural. This is because of the supernatural elements which will appear throughout the film, for example ghosts. Supernatural films also empathize the unknown and are usually suspenseful. Therefore, I feel that our film idea falls into these genres.
Similar films and storylines.
GHOST 1980

Plot: Sam and Molly are a very happy couple and deeply in love. Walking back to their new apartment after a night out at the theatre, they encounter a thief in a dark alley, and Sam is murdered. He finds himself trapped as a ghost and realises that his death was no accident. He must warn Molly about the danger that she is in. But as a ghost he can not be seen or heard by the living, and so he tries to communicate with Molly through Oda Mae Brown, a psychic who didn't even realise that her powers were real.

Similarities: The genre category for Ghost is a supernatural-drama, which is the same as ours. Also, in film Ghost, the main character is a ghost who is struggling to come to terms with his death and refuses to say goodbye to the ones he loves who are still alive. Also, Sam is killed in a tragic accident leaving everyone who is left behind and who cares for him and loves his distraught. Similarly, Lola is also killed in a tragic accident leaving her parents, boyfriend and friends behind who find it particularly challenging to accept her death, so much that her best friend commits suicide so she can be with her. In both Ghost and our film, the audience are not aware straight away that the main character is actually a ghost, this keeps them intuited and adds an element of suspense.

THE INVISIBLE 2007

Plot:Nick Powell is an excellent high-school student who raises money by selling homework and results of quizzes to his schoolmates. He aims to travel to London for a writer's course - telling his best friend, Pete Egan, that he has already bought the airplane ticket but he has not told to his mother yet. Annie Newton has a problem with Pete, who owes money to her. As events unfold, due to a case of mistaken identity Nick takes a severe beating from Annie and her gang, his body dumped in a sewer. The next morning, he discovers he cannot be seen - he is now a spirit in a state of limbo and can only observe as the events of that day unfold.

Simalataties: Again, a similarity that this film shares with ours is that the main character is a ghost and is stuck in Limbo. Also, both the main character in this film (Nick) and the main character in our film (Lola) are both teenagers who at first do not realise they are actually dead. Another similarity is that throughout both films, both teens must discover how they died with the help from friends and people who can see them. I think that both our films will have a similar target audience as they both have the same genre and the main characters in both our films are a similar age therefore I feel that they are both targeted at teens and young adults particularly.

Where did we get inspiration from for our film idea?

Although as a group we came up with the storyline together, we took inspiration from a variety of films. However, our storyline is very similar to Sixth Sense. Both our films have similarities in the way that the audience do not realise the death of the main character until the very end. Both films vaguely foreshadow the ending of the film throughout but its not until the very end until all reviled.
