Melodrama: Research - Mise En Scene

Make Up

The two lead characters will be wearing the typical make up styles of a teenage girl. Lola's make up will be minimal in the beginning as she has just awoke from hospital. She will reflect the appearance of Angelina Jolie in the film Girl, Interrupted. Hannah, Lola's friend, will have make up on in the style of a typical teenage girl. However, when Lola discovers her dead body, we will use make up to make sure that she appears to be dead. It will be similar to this: Sunken in eyes and bruises on her face from where she had the accident. Her face will be pale and her lips will have a bluish tone to them to show that she is dead.

Hannah is also shown to be a self harmer. She has cuts down her arm which are seen in the middle of the film. We find out at the end that Hannah killed herself due to being responsible for Lolas death. So, the cuts are important as they foreshadow Hannah's death.

Costumes

LOLA AND HANNAH:
At the beginning of the film, Lola is likely to be wearing a hospital gown. She changes into her own clothes later, which are just general loungewear that is not particulalry flattering, which is why she goes home to change before seeing her boyfriend.  Her friend Hannah will be wearing modern, fashionable clothing that is eccentric and bright.

LOLA'S PARENTS AND BOYFRIEND:
The mother and father will be wearing work clothes, to reflect their busy, working/middle class lifestyle, as they are presented as regularly failing to
make time for Lola. The psychiatrist will be wearing a smart shirt and a pencil skirt to highlight her profession. Lola's boyfriend will be wearing typical teenage boy clothes.
