Film reviews of similar films

Films reviews

To find out whether our target audience will enjoy our film, I decided to take a look at some reviews of similar films to ours to get a general idea of what the target population like and didn't like about the films and ultimately see if any improvements to our film can be made.

Sixth sense

On the website rotten tomatoes I discovered that sixth sense, a film with a very similar genre, storyline and plot to our film had an overall 89% success rate.
From reading a variety of different comments, I found that what was particularly alluring in this film and what the audience particularly enjoyed was the emotional connection between the characters and the viewer. Due to the film having a sense of mundane realism, it allowed the audience to sympathise with the characters and feel more involved. What also proved effective was the end plot twist which revealed a shocking discovery for the audience. The audience described the plot as 'unsettling' and 'intriguing' ' and  'intelligent'.  Many of the viewers also went on to say that the ending is very 'unpredictable' which demonstrates a level of suspension and subtly throughout the film.
However, the only criticisms of the film that this review site displays is the used of actor sand actresses. One particular viewer wrote ' another intelligent flick done in by its misplaced and worn-out star.' this tells me that the characters are particularly important and the actor/actresses in our film  must portray a good representation of the character we are trying create.

The lovely bones

On the film review website metacritic I discovered that the film the Lovely Bones which has a similar main character and plot to our film only had a 46% success rated.
After reading the reviews, it became apparent to me that the storyline was too complicated for the viewer to understand. The storyline was described as a 'scramble'. This tells me that the viewer finds it very hard to follow an unclear storyline. In this film, Suzie Salmon ( the main character) is in Limbo and struggling to distinguish what is real and what is not, which ultimately confuses the audience as they feel that too much is going off all at once. From this criticism, I feel I can slightly alter parts of our film to ensure that the audience is completely aware of what's happening and the plot twist at the ends of the film is explained fully to the audience, ultimately shocking them but ensuring that they are still following.
However, this film also had some very positive comments as one viewer described the film as 'very moving'. Similarly to sixth sense, the emotional connection between the on-screen character and the viewer allows the audience to feel more emotionally involved and allows them to  personally sympathise with the characters.
